i don't want to meet them either. i'm afraid they'll be jerks, or that they won't be anything special in person. i can't have that happen.

First time I met them:

After the show in Atlanta in November '06 at the Variety Playhouse. Watched them tear it up (my first BK show), then walked around the back of the building and they walked out. Dan was eating something and Pat was standing there. Just said hi, love the music, keep it up, you know. Then got a picture with Dan...cool guys.

Second time:

They played an in-store set at Grimey's Record Store in Nashville (where I live). Afterwards they just hung around the store, but no one seemed to want to talk to them...so I got a PatStick (which was destroyed only from 5 songs) and had him sign it, said thanks, then saw Dan in the back by the vinyls listening to some stuff. Me and my brother talked to him for a while about what music he likes, guitar preferences...he recommended some weird record to us...Greg Sahm or something like that. I don't know where Dan gets his influences because they're so obscure.

Anyway, that's about it....record shopping with Dan was definitely awesome.

Friday - November 24th 2006 - The Vic Theatre - Chicago. I arrived early because I was meeting some friends for drinks before the show. As I approached the Vic, I noticed Pat hanging out in front having a smoke. I just walked up to him and started talking and he made conversation with me as if he were as interested in what I had to say. He was truly one of the nicest people that I have ever met and someone that I would want to know even if he wasn't the greatest drummer in the greatest band of the 21st Century. I met Pat and Dan a few times since and they are always cool. They truly appreciate their fans and it shows in every way. From the music to the social interaction, The Black Keys never disappoint and always treat their fans like Brothers.

2005 at the Lime Spider in Akron, OH for the Square Records Birthday Bash:

Pat was walking around before their set and I said "Hey, I'm really pumped to see you guys live. You're my favorite band!" He was just like "Okay, cool." Then he proceeded to tear shit up!

After the show Dan was putting his gear away and I approached the front of the stage and said "Your Jerry Donahue is bad ass! I've been looking for a Tele with a Bigsby for a while but can't find anything." Dan's response was epic: "Just put one on yourself. That's what I did. If you fuck it up no big deal."

I've seen Pat outside of The Metro here in Chicago. I'm 6 ft 4 in tall and Pat seems to tower over even me. He's one tall drink o' water. I didn't talk to him though. Never met Dan either, but a buddy of mine does the lighting for the Black Keys US tours, and he said Dan and his wife actually made dinner for the whole crew a while back at their home in Akron. My buddy has nothing but the nicest things to say about Dan and his family and Pat.

I don't know if I want to meet them. I mean, I really do, but I would probably geek out and it would be weird and then it would be over and the rest of my life I'd be thinking about that time I met my favorite band in the world and acted like a jackass. I mean, what do you say to them? - "oh hi, I idolize you. thought you should know. not like I touch myself and think about you or anything weird like that, but I want to be like you when I grow up???" nothing would sound cool. I guess I'd just shake their hands, and thank them for all the great music. that's all you can really do. I'm not going to be all superfan like "whoa bro OMG I can't believe it! Dan Auerbach and Pat Carney!!! I've dug you guys since 2003 man, let me snap a cellphone pic, whoa my bro's are never gonna believe this bro..." and just for the record, anyone who says that Dan/Pat were dicks to them probably deserved it by being a know-it-all or a douchebag much like I just described. Imagine if people treated YOU like some kind of freakshow...

Whenever I have a chance to meet famous musicians (or even not so famous) that I really admire/worship, then I freak out and don't want to go through with it. It's just too weird to go and flatter the shit out of a guy like that, by telling them how awesome they are. And I don't get into autographs or pictures. Like I said, I think it's best to just shake hands and say thanks and let them try to have a normal night without fanboys/girls all up in their shit. They probably just want to have a beer after the show and unwind. I doubt they would ever say that out loud because you have to respect your fans (no matter how weird/annoying they are), but I think it's true.

@nort great idea

dam I got my girlfriend to get this video after we met Pat after a show. we stood outside the venue with other fans for ages after the show waiting for dan and pat to leave. when they came out to talk to fans they were so humble and modest - not sure why i was thinking otherwise. we got some photos, all of them i look like a bit of a dickhead with a big smile on my face. I was useless just standing there staring thinking of all the questions i wanted to ask. i tried to remember the answers after the show. dan and pat were kind enough to humor us before going to their after show show beers somewhere

July 17th, 2009 Boulder CO Fox Theatre
Wife and I went up to Boulder 3 hrs before show to grab a bite and some drinks. Walked by the small theatre they were playing, peaked in the front doors and Dan & Pat were standing right there at the merch table. I told my wife "lets stay around here for a minute." They came out two minutes later. We asked if we could grab a picture. Pat has a big smile in the picture standing next to me, my wife is next to Dan and he looks like my wife is stepping on his foot. After we took pictures, Pat asked if we knew where he could find any hiking boots, cracking a joke about Boulder I guess. And that was it. Following night:
July 18th, 2009 Mile High Music Festival
Got to the festival with wife and 4 yr old son (huge Pat fan and aspiring drummer) around 1pm, they came on at 7. We watched a few other bands and as soon as their stage was clear from the previous show we darted to the front row and hung out for about an hour. Right before they came on we could see them standing behind the stage. My son waved to Pat and he waved back at him. During the show my son waved and flirted with Dan's daughter (there with his wife on the side of the stage). After the show Pat came out to meet some fans, gave my son a signed drum stick and signed his shirt. Made his year.

I win.

To those lucky ones: can we share our stories of meeting Dan and Patrick? I think this would be cool. It might turn into a competition: Who had the coolest experience?! I will go first but these aren't very cool:

DAN:
I was in Red Rocks Amphitheater, CO, drinking a beer. The show was my two favorite bands of the decade back to back: Black Keys and My Morning Jacket. My friend went off to buy more beer. I looked around and there stood my hero Dan Auerbach looking out into the mountains. I left my spot and went down to see him. There were many things I wanted to ask and tell him but all I could say was "If I had claws I would climb all over these mountains. It's beautiful here, ain't it." He said "I don't think you wanna do that man." Then my friend showed up and said "Hey, it's Dan Auerbach! Let's take a picture." So we did and Dan's eyes were closed in the picture.

PAT:
At the bar at a Drummer show, I was talking to the rest of Drummer and then Patrick appeared and I whipped out my "Famous Drums" T-shirt and pointed to Ringo's Ludwig kit. I said, "Ludwig, man!" Patrick said in a deep monotone "Hell yeah."

This may shock everyone but I know a kid from Ohio who ran into them after a show, and he said they were dicks! I can't believe it.
