This is a great thread. I started a black keys station on Pandora and it threw out a lot of great, yet insanely common stuff. Zepp, the who, floyd, the beatles, nirvana, sonic youth, the white stripes, smashing pumpkins. All great bands but I've listened to them so much. Posted 2 years ago #

I've been doing some reading on Mark Neill, who produced the new 'Keys album at Muscle Shoals Here's a band (not necessarily to everyone's taste) who he recorded at hs studio and I've been listening to via myspace at least http://www.myspace.com/losstraitjackets funny cover of 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' thrown in there i love a band who wears masks ha Posted 2 years ago #

I've read about Mark Neill before he and the Keys got together. Surely a cool guy who knows his shit. Los Straitjackets have been around for quite a while now. I guess they're one of if not THE best surf bands of the day and are also pretty known in those "circuits". Wham bam, thank you m'am. Posted 2 years ago #

Got turned on to Jay Reatard. It really really sucks that he died. Both his albums are awesome. Posted 2 years ago #

The Black Keys have led me to Junior Kimbrough, R.L. Burnside, Radio Moscow, Fred McDowell and I also don't mind Blind Willie McTell. I've recently been scouring through Alive Records and Fat Possum records site searching for more. There is a lot to choose from so I dare say I'll just about have to organise a shipping container from The States to save on postage!!! haha By the way Dusty Reeds, was that poster on TBK merch site??? I want it BAD! My favourite TBK album is the one I'm listening to right now. Posted 2 years ago #

because i was looking at the line up for bonaroo which the black keys will be at, i was introduced to this band: Carolina Chocolate Drops- this band might not be for everyone. they are definitely bluegrass. if you like bluegrass check 'em out. if not, still check 'em out cause they are very talented and also not what most people expect when they first hear them. So many awesome bands out there that are some way tied to TBK that I could spend my entire tax refund on the music plus some...I really dig on Hacienda from the stuff I've heard so far. I may have to check out Brimstone Howl too since they are from Nebraska...I haven't even checked them out live yet...don't make it out to shows like I used to Posted 1 year ago #

The Strange Boys new CD "Be Brave" is great. A lot more depth on this CD, whereas I felt the debut the songs had a tendency to run into one another. Definitely go check it out Posted 1 year ago #

CMC, I'm also a big fan of "Be Brave". I saw the Strange Boys the other night in Austin and it was a hell of a show. I would highly suggest The Strange Boys "And Girls Club" or "Be Brave" to anyone who is interested. In my opinion they're a gross hybrid of rock and roll greats over the years. Posted 1 year ago #

I'm not sure if anyone has said it yet but Mr. Tom Waits. Pat's uncle Ralph and plays sax and I think Dan's uncle or great uncle or something like that Mark Ribot plays guitar on many of Wait's albums. He's not for everyone, but he's definitely a turning point in anybody's life who decides to wonder into his music. My top 5 Waits albums in no particular order: Bone Machine, Small Change, Rain Dogs, Swordfishtrombones, and Mule Variations. Posted 1 year ago #

Marc Ribot and Dan are not related. Marc was on Attack & Release cause of Ralph Carney. Posted 1 year ago #
