Hey y'all. So i've been playing "tighten up" quite a bit lately, and it has occurred to me that Dan's guitar sound has been changing really rapidly. Since he's started really playing the Harmony, his sound has started getting a little less fuzzed, a little thinner than the crazy robust fuzz sound of the earlier records. I really like this new sound, and i was hoping that if anybody has been lucky enough to see them since Blakroc dropped had a chance to geek out on the pedals/amp setup he was rocking.

Seems to me up to Attack and Release Dan has been the James Bond of the music world. With every new release comes a new version, instead of a new actor and girl though, its a new guitar and new sound. He must like his Harmony cuz hes had that since before the release of Attack and Release, I think before they even went into studio for that one. Sounds like some sort of pog style pedal in tighten up as someone mentioned before. I saw him in Toronto with The Fast Five but couldnt glimpse them pedals. I think hes still using his Big Muff as that was in some recent you tube videos.

He had two green big muffs on his board on Saturday. He was as fuzzy as ever. The studio set up is completely different though.

Live at The Crystal Ballroom had green muff all over it with his Harmony.

He used a http://www.fuzzbox.com/cob and an analogman peppermint fuzz last year with The Fast Five.

He was also using two silverface Super Reverbs this weekend, too. Went away from the Marshall, which I didn't care for. The tones on Live at The Crystal Ballroom are some of my favorite of his.

According to the photos he didn't use a POG but then again maybe they didn't play Tighten Up at that gig at all. But I somehow doubt he was using a POG in the studio, I think he just played that octave seperately and added it. Or he could have used the COB by Prescription Electronics that jmjohnson40 already mentioned.

Wham bam, thank you m'am.

Tighten up was not played at that show. It a practically a survey course in their most popular songs from each album.

The cob he had last year was black. It might be possible that it is on the far right of his pedal board here. I only heard fuzz though. No trem or volume pedal used.

I was just past the upper right of the first photo. My record label probably didn't let them post a pic of me.

I actually found this video of the SXSW show:

the sounds is pretty crappy, but you can tell that at least with this song, the guitar definitely is real fuzzy like jmjohnson said. i'm excited to see if he keeps that tone when performing the newer stuff.

Although, it definitely sounds like during that breakdown a trem pedal was used, or maybe just the vibrato on the Twin.

It seems like, at least on A&R they were kind of "saving something in the tank" for live shows. As if there is no need to get too heavy on record. "Same Old THing" for example isn't very fuzzy on the album but absolutely rocks heavy live.

Its interesting you say that, because I was just thinking about how they were gonna recreate a song like "Tighten Up" live. I think you're right. I bet he's going to approach it pretty similarly to the way he recreated A&R. And I can't wait to see it.

I was just listening to "Same Old Thing", and to me there is a good amount of fuzz on it. It's not like the all fuzzed out sound they play on it live, on the same hand. It just seems like on the record that the low end is really loose and fuzzy on that song, and from what I hear on Live at the Crystal Ballroom it's really fuzzy and punchy!

The POG seems really interesting for octave up/down tones! EH has the 3 knobber version now. I wonder how it compares to the slider EQ version. How is the quality for new EH pedals?

I'd say the quality is average. It's a factory that produces masses of pedals but most of them are sturdy and sound good. They have some pretty unique stuff that you won't find elsewhere, as the POG for example.

Just an aside, I love that see-through Bonzo kit Pat's playing. Don't see those too often!

I'm resurrecting this to see if there's any new intel on what pedal Dan uses to get that octave sound on Tighten Up. Not the phaser sound near the end but the chorus guitar break at the beginning and middle. On that note, what phaser does he use?
