I don't expect too many responses, but I was wondering what gear the drummers around here use?
I'm looking to up my hi-hats and get a new ride, so I was wondering what suggestions I should demo?

I have a 1970 Ludwig blue oyster pearl kit. I like Paiste cymbals. I've played Sabians and Zildjians too but I don't like em as much. Check out Paiste Giant Beat Hi-Hats, or 2002 Sound Edge. For my ride I use a 2002 crash/ride because I play hard rock. I mainly use these things because they sound awesome and because Bonzo (and Pat) use them. Your ride selection has gotta depend on the music you're playing though. For example, if you're playing jazz definitely check out the Zildjian K Customs. But the easiest way to check out different sounding shit is to watch Memphis Drum Shop/MyCymbal's demos on Youtube. They have tons of videos of dudes testing out cymbals and stuff. That's some good gear from both of you! See, I leaning towards the 2002 Sound Edge (maybe 15"), but I've read a few reviews that they're slightly fragile. I play pretty loud, so I'm also not sure what ride I want. So I'll definently check out those youtube demos... Never will I buy without testing out the sound quality first (that's a huge no-no). I have a basic 4 piece Tama Starclassic Maple drumkit. 16" A Custom crash, 22" A Custom Ping Ride, a 14" A Custom Hi-Hats. It's pretty basic stuff. I play indie-rock and the type of drums I have suit those needs well, but I could also play heavier rock and roll like psychedelic, shoegaze, etc. Very versatile kit in my opinion. 7 piece Sonor Force 2005 Natural finish Birch (I'm also a Rush/Neil Peart freak), Zildjian K pies, Remo heads, Promark 5A sticks. The Sonor sound is very rich/full and Sonor's hardware (even on the more entry-level stuff) is like pro hardware on other brands. Very strong/tough. I break it down to a 4-piece for the BK sessions. You know, Pat's always had a really killer drum sound and his thread made me realize I don't really know much about his set-up. Anyone have a clue? I couldn't find much on-line. Posted 1 year ago #

I ventured to Guitar World, that's a pretty sweet place. I checked out a ton of cymbals, and I loved the 2002 ride... the Sound Edge 14" seemed too high and bright and their wasn't any 15" to demo. @Nort_Binkerson, is their much of a difference between the 14" and 15"? Posted 1 year ago #

I read an old interview one time where Pat said he only uses broken and found cymbals. I thought that was pretty damn awesome but I also think it was maybe a bit of a joke. There may have been one time early on when he used broken and found cymbals, but those days are probably long gone. I thought he used to use Ludwig drums. And more recently I thin kI've seen him use Gretsch for some reason? I might be making all of this up - just going by memory. I can say that he does have a very unique setup - the way he arranges his drums is different than most drummers (again, just from memory, I could be wrong). "I ain’t sayin’ you treated me unkind. You could have done better but I don’t mind. You just kinda wasted my precious time. But don’t think twice, it’s all right." -Bob Dylan Posted 1 year ago #

No Mirby, you're correct. Pat's floor-tom setup is oddly unique in that he has a floor tom to the left of his hi-hats, when most drummers...well, right handed drummers anyway have the floor tom to their far right next to their ride cymbal. Along with the "sellout" beard that people have been mentioning Dan sporting ever since Brothers hit I've also noticed Pat "normalize" his drum set-up by putting a floor tom over to the right next to his ride. Haha, just commenting. Posted 1 year ago #

What's a "sellout" beard? Is that anything like a Burt Reynolds or Tom Sellack mustache from back in the day? I've been wooly since 2002 I'm no drummer, so I don't even want to talk about something like I know what it is. I just think that Ludwig, Premier, Slingerland, and Gretsch make some awesome drums...and I'm a fan of the C&C and DW drums too. I've always dug Paiste cymbals...but those RAF "mod" Zildjians Zakk Starkey used on the Who superbowl halftime show were cool, but a novelty. Posted 1 year ago #

he didn't add the tom to "normalize" his kit. songs like howlin for you and sinister kid have breakdowns where he slams on both toms simultaneously, gives it a much larger sound. even with the second tom on his right, his kit is far from a normal set up... if anything it is even less normal. and seconded, what is a sellout beard? I forget who or where it was mentioned, but I'm pretty sure it was on this forum...but someone mentioned how around the time Brothers was going to be released that Dan have trimmed his beard and it wasn't all burly anymore and along with this the Black Keys were refining their sound to be more tame and getting a lot of media attention for their new album with Warner Bros. and all...the term sellout beard was used.
