The day started with me destroying the bumper of my friend's Mom's car and totaling the passenger side door of my already beat to hell '92 plymouth mini-van when I pulled into the drive way...
Then we arrive at the gig around 6. There's a line of maybe 40 or so people when we arrive, and 30 more were sitting on the benches or scattered nearby desperately asking people if they were willing to sell their tickets. Over the next hour the line ballooned in size and they started letting people in at 7.
The Town Ballroom is the nicest and most brilliantly set up venue I have ever been to. There's an open space bar and merch store in the front. Proceed to the next room and you're at the stage. The area around the stage is shaped like a horse-shoe, and there are 3 separate levels, each one lower then the next until you are at the stage. This set up offers a great view no matter where you are, and I think shorter people would especially love it. Not only this, the left and right side of the top horseshoe had their own separate bars.
Me and my friends rushed to the front near the side of the stage where Dan's mic was, we had to save a spot for one friend because of a bathroom problem... he comes back and says they offer complementary mints on the way out. This place is just getting nicer and nicer. We've got A/C blasting us in the face and it feels great after waiting outside in the humidity.
I remember someone mentioning how great the opening music was... they were right. It was hard to hear the lyrics so I couldn't figure out who most of the artists were, but most of it was very soul sounding, and they had the Bass cranked way the fuck up. A few of the songs were funkier with James Brown style singing. I know one of the songs was Phyllis Dillon's take on "Woman of the Ghetto."
We had to wait a pretty long time for the show to start. It was almost 8:30, the place was packed with a couple thousand people, the body heat completely negating the AC at this point, and the play list had already looped once and began to repeat songs. The opening band "The Whigs" finally came on.
The guitarist was wearing skin tight jeans and a denim shirt. "We're The Whigs, we're from Athens Georgia. I thought it was supposed to be cold up here!" He had long legs and he had this unorthodox way of doing splits and power kicks during the whole show, look up a video of The Whigs and you will see what I mean. He would get really close to the edge of the stage, strike a power chord and either point or kick. I almost got kicked in the face like 3 times. They put on a good show, though I thought some of their songs started to sound the same during the middle of their set. It picked up at the end and the stage was soaked in puddles of sweat where the musicians once stood.
I specifically remember seeing the dark shadow of The Black Keys equipment behind the lighted stage where The Whigs were playing. The bass amp looked like it was 20 feet tall at the time, and it was covered in a tarp so all you could see was a black silhouette with an orange light dimly penetrating the blackness. Later on I would discover it was being supported by car tires, adding to it's illusion of height. All of the amps were. The drum riser even had a tire tread design wrapped around it's edge.
The Whigs road crew packs up and the opening music comes back on. I bet my friend $20 Liquid swords would be the last song played, all of which went towards his Mom's car repair. The equipment is moved, the music stops and the crowd began to chant "Let's go Buffalo." "We're the Black Keys, we're from Akron Ohio..." Dan told a story of how it had been 7 years since they last played Buffalo, and that back then they drove around in a shitty Dodge Caravan and they went through a snow storm to get here. Then they launched into Thickfreakness and it was all euphoric from there. I noticed Dan's voice sounds a lot more nasally in person, but not in a bad way. The Brothers Banner lit up, and hundreds of balloons seemed to appear from nowhere, trading bounces around the crowd.
This is when my dirty douche encounter took place. Some girl goes up to my friend and bitches at him to move so she could squeeze up front. She grabs a balloon and starts wacking us on the head, and at one point she took an ice cube out of her cup of beer and threw it at the stage for no apparent reason. An angry looking 300+ lb staff member walked over and told her he'd throw her the fuck out. And she bitches at him too, hah.
The rest of the show happened without incident. One of my highlights was when Dan was punching the body of his guitar, letting the strings ring out without strumming during the breakdown of "Busted."
"We've got some friends with us." Quickly I realize these are new faces, Dan said this was their first show. The Blakroc guys must not have been able to continue the tour for whatever reason. The new guys were alright, but during a few of the songs they were way too quiet. The Keyboardist also started to come in early during "Howlin' for You," and Dan had to compensate by turning the intro into a small jam, which was no big deal.
Then they hit the final note of I Got Mine. "We'll see you next time." The crowd noise grew in volume and turned into an accelerating stomping "Black Keys" chant. It got to the point where it was too fast to audibly say Black Keys and they came back on. "We're gonna play a few more songs for you."
I shouted "Too Afriad To Love You" and they launched into it. At the end of the show, my friend got the set list. Too Afraid To Love You was not on the list
After the show me and a friend bought a "Black Keys Tour of the World 2010" shirt from the merch store. We waited around the tour bus to meet Dan and Pat. One friend didn't feel like waiting so he went back to the mini-van. It was about an hour wait but it was worth it. At one point The Whigs drove by in a mini-van and waved at us. The roadies finished loading up the equipment when one roadie told us Dan and Pat were right outside the exit. Then they headed on to the bus and the tour manager told us they'd be right back. Dan and Pat come out and Dan says in a very curious voice "what are you guys doing out here?," and he's already holding a marker hah! Both Dan and Pat seemed really nice and they didn't seem bothered at all. They signed our shirts, took a picture and went on their way.

I'm the one with the necklace standing next to Dan. 3 out of the 4 people in this picture are named Dan!
I'm reciting the list from memory so it might be off by a bit
