since most of the people have the raw boogie ep, what do you think of it? How would you compare it to tbk and keep it hid?

Doesnt really compare in my mind. Its good but you can definitely tell they were a younger group. Dan is really top notch but the other two guys in the group don't do it for me. The bassist and drummer don't really stand out or have anything unique to their sound to me. Yes they play well. Also the recording sounds kinda modern and polished to me , particularly the bass and drums sound too modern/clean. I do enjoy the songs but TBK and Keep it Hid is a def step up for me

yeah, the bassist, Kip Amore is stuck to doing weddings in the akron area. i don't know what happend to Jason Edwards. Kip Amore was just a hire out kinda guy, i don't think he was really into that music. but dan said that tbk was his his first permanent band, so i think the barnburners were maybe just a way to pay the bills until something else happend.
i think dan had just dropped out of college at this point, so h really needed some cash.

I love the EP, so raw, Big Road Blues is such an awesome song, some awesome playing from Dan on it. Its just cool to hear Dan doing something different, and maybe more technical in parts, using 9th chords and stuff, his voice is cool on it too. I don't really see the need to compare it, its a completely different thing and awesome in its own way.

It had nothing to do with money. Dan was young, it was his first band, and it reflected where he was musically at that time. Kip's a good guy, very funny, but pretty unenthusiastic; and Jason is a really good technical drummer, but not very interesting.

Great musicians don't come out of the womb fully formed, and this was just one step along the way. 10 years from now, someone might look back at Brothers and ask how it stacks up against TBKs new stuff.

tell you what nappy. if i could be that good when im "young" like now! i'd be pretty happy!

getting some good lyrics down at the moment just trying to get fully formed songs is a pain though! haha trying my best thats for sure!

Shoot first. Ask questions later.

listening to this now whilst I'm chilling out. awesome. nappy, you gotta get Dan to do this some more! just a side album of blues stuff. nice simple standard blues. that shit would get lapped up.

the little jazzy bit in meet me in the city at the end of "pleeeeaaasse please please don't leave me right now baby oh right now" is very interesting but cool.

You can tell even now that Dans got such brilliant intuition of the sound of the music its very cool.

From the interviews Ive read of Dan's...he doesnt dig "standard blues". There are some people out there with tons of natural talent. I feel Dan is one of those ppl

Dug the EP but I probably won't listen to it that much. It's great to hear what Dan was doing back then, but that's where it ends. That stuff is nowhere near as good as anything the Black Keys have done. It just sounds like a really good local band that would never be more than a really good local band. That's still quite an accomplishment- better than I could do no doubt. But they don't have the magic/mojo. That special thing that makes a band really stand out and makes you think "damn, it's just a matter of time before these guys get to be VERY well known and liked..."

"I ain’t sayin’ you treated me unkind. You could have done better but I don’t mind. You just kinda wasted my precious time. But don’t think twice, it’s all right."

I think some of his playing with the Barnburners is tighter than some of the TBK stuff.

I think a lot of people have preconceived notions about it because they know it was prior to tbk and it was in his "formative" years.

I will listen to it often.
