Fu-manchu are the kings of fuzz. I've been eyeing up Creepyfingers stuff for years now but I just can't do it. I can't spend the $$$ on boutique dirt because I know what'll happen. I'll end up selling it since I build so many of my own awesome dirtboxes for a fraction of the boutique price. But I agree 100% - those things are killer. Check this shit out (guts of a Creepyfingers treblebooster)

Those Caps are HUGE! Love his wiring jobs, he does clean stuff for sure. I think it was Brad's builds that brought me around to fuzz. I always heard that a lot of the boutique builders built so few of these and had such a high demand that you could never think about getting a pedal. I think I was close once to getting a Magnabender off of some dude in a trade, but he didn't want to go the trade route. It would have been a cool one with the matched 60's NOS RCA transistors too. I heard his Sugar Boost (Rangemaster) is great.

I totally understand where you're coming from though. I think if I could build this stuff, then it would probably be a no brainer to search out what needs to be searched out and build. WHen I started to get really into fuzz, I thought I would grab a few examples of primo boutique built clones, (the boutique guys used originals and good recorded examples) and study the tones and characteristics and proceed to build my own examples....I don't think I've made my move into building :D. Someday...

Yeah those huge caps are neat. I'm not so sure they do anything for the tone but they do look cool as hell and make me want it.
I love the way he builds, with no board and with those terminal strips rivetted to the enclosure. Burly and effective, efficient and attractive. Very well thought-out layout. Great use of space. Nice and neat. Professional job.

Trust me, regardless of the innards layout, I am trying to get my hands on a Hoof for sure. I guess if I add a true blue Tall Font Green Russian muff, that would be Crystal Ballroom "toanz"?

I must say I enjoy the uniformity of builders who use the same case or similar cases for their builds. It is so much easier patching stuff together.

Then again those BIG honking Solasound cases with the tiny little component board inside are cool too, and stay pretty much anchored to where they were originally placed!

I think getting my hands dirty with some pedal builds is inevitible...just the convenience factor alone would be worth it, once I knew my shit.

It was a matter of necessity for me. I get what I want. And I want cool pedals. But I also want my wife not to kick my ass. And so I taught myself how to build pedals. I have no actual skills when it comes to understanding audio circuits, but I can take a layout and make it into a pedal.

All you need to do is learn about resistors, capacitors, transistors, and diodes. Those are the main components. Resistors are easy - they don't have polarity. And film capacitors don't have polarity either - only electrolytic capacitors do. Components without polarity can be installed either way, there is no backwards. Diodes, electrolytic caps, and transistors need to be oriented properly or they will fail/fry when you introduce a power cource - or at the very least, it won't work.
You also need to learn about wiring switches, jacks, and potentiometers (which is just a fancy name for a variable resistor). Oh and some basic soldering skills.

Then you just need to search the web for schematics/layouts for pedals you want to build and then get creative with your enclosure and where you want the knobs/jacks/switch to be, etc.

Here's my gear.

Signal Chain has been adjusted slightly since these shots:
EHX POG
EHX Freeze
midfi Pitch Pirate
zvex Super Duper 2 in 1
earthquaker Hoof fuzz
crowther prunes and custard
earthquaker hummingbird
emma discombobulator
cream tangerine compressor
Maxon AD900 analog delay

I play an American Strat or 335 depending on mood. And run everything through a Swart STR.

@phillienelson The Swart is 5 watts of golden tone with a killer reverb tank. It is a new spin on the fender black face tone. Pretty much love it.

Down graded to a Blues Junior, but plug it through a 4x12 every so often, such cool little amps. Two main guitars are 50-60s Harmony Stratotone H47 and Gibson es335. Sovtec Big Muff is main pedal....and thats about it for me. Looking to include a mxr boost and a flange or delay as well.

Wah every so often.

Thats me.

No doubt, Brad makes a fine pedal and he's a super cool dude to boot, well in e-mail and internet communication!

The Harakiri is a great pedal. I would take one of these or the Harakiri Ibanez Standard Fuzz tuned, which Brad tuned to have a little more output and can bring the HEAVY shit more so than the original Ibanez Standard circuit. I guess being in a bitchin' Stoner rock band, you get to know how to best get heavy fuzzed out tones!

Thought I'd give an update about what I'm doing with my gear lately...

I did some tweaking to my GGG Green Russian Muff clone. I messed with the tone stack a bit but more importantly I replaced all four clipping diodes with red LED's, and replaced Q2 and Q3 with germanium transistors. Then I rehoused it in a army green enclosure because it was in a pretty crappy enclosure that I had spray painted gold and had an extra hole drilled in it.

I also just built a Marshall Supa Fuzz clone. Just finished it last night so I only got to play with it for a little while but it sounds real nice from what I can tell. It was late though so I had to play very quietly. I used a very small enclosure so it was a bit of a trick getting it all in there. In fact, I screwed up and it doesn't really fit. I have to rearrange the switch/battery so I'll probably end up putting tape over a hole and making it look like shit in the process, but that's alright. It'll give me a project to do down the road someday (re-house it).

'nother gear update...

1. Built an Analogman Sun Face clone (germanium).
http://theblackkeysfanlounge.com/forum/topic/chasing-dans-fuzz-diy-and-technical-jargon-within/page/2#post-30836

2. Bought an Arctic White Fender Stratocaster yesterday with maple fretboard. Found it on Craigslist for a steal of a price. It's in great shape. I'm going to take it to my local shop for a proper setup and maybe a new nut. I also ordered a set of Fender Custom Shop '69 pickups for it. It's my Hendrix wannabe guitar haha. It's nice to have a Strat to compliment my SG. Two very different sounds. I never thought I'd ever buy another Stratocaster but man this thing is sweet. I know they're pretty plain/boring but they're more versatile than people give them credit for. And having the vibrato opens up some doors. Fun to play desert rock and Jimi type stuff and whatnot.

3. Working on building a Vox V846 wah clone using fancy capacitors and inductor etc. I'll give an update when it's done but it may be a week or two.
